WOMAN ON FIRE HONOREE
Wambui Essie, Multidisciplinary Journalist, Communications Consultant
RESOURCEFUL – DETERMINED – RELIABLE
Wambui Essie is an award-winning multidisciplinary journalist, communications consultant, media advisor, content creator, women & youth workshop facilitator, and former radio producer. She’s passionate about storytelling, particularly focusing on social justice issues, health & wellness, culture, African diaspora, and online safety and privacy. Essie is currently involved in research on the global media industry, as well as the spread of misinformation/disinformation. In 2015, Essie co-founded wakenyacanada.com and is the Editor-In-Chief of this online media platform for Kenyans in Canada. A lesser-known fact about her is that she is a singer-songwriter of gospel music and has previous lives in South Africa and South America.
With all the clamouring for time and attention for media coverage, there simply isn’t enough time or political will for mainstream media to tell all the stories that need to be told. Much too often, the stories that get sacrificed are of marginalized individuals and communities, including women and recent immigrants. And when our stories are told, they are often placed within particular, often unfavourable frames.
Founded in 2015, Wakenyacanada.com is an e-magazine that purposes to be a voice for Kenyadians, synthesizing, distilling and blending the Kenyan & Canadian identities in our coverage. The website owes its success to an excellent team of volunteer contributors.
Most recently, WakenyaCanada helped bring to light some deportation cases within our community that would have occurred quietly, and by raising national awareness, the decisions to remove were averted.
WakenyaCanada is a member of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada [NEPMCC], an umbrella body for Canada’s “other voices” which are unfortunately rarely heard.
